Marble countertops and vanities.

The veining people fall for, and a surface that ages with you. Marble is softer than granite and rewards people who like a little patina.

What marble is

Marble is a metamorphic rock formed when limestone recrystallises under heat and pressure. It is mostly calcite, which gives it its soft glow and its famous veining, from the grey lines of Carrara to the bolder veins of Calacatta.

Where it works best

Bathroom vanities, shower walls, fireplace surrounds and feature islands. It can go in a working kitchen, but calcite reacts with acids: lemon, wine, vinegar and tomato leave dull etch marks, and it scratches more easily than granite or quartz. A honed finish hides etching far better than a polished one.

Care and sealing

Clean with warm water and a pH-neutral cleaner, never vinegar or bleach. Seal it regularly, typically every 6 to 12 months. Sealer slows staining but does not stop etching, so treat marks as part of the character or choose a honed finish.

How we work with it

Marble is softer to cut and more likely to chip at an edge, so the edge profile matters. We will talk you through which edges hold up and where a mitred or eased edge is the safer choice.

Questions about marble

Can I use marble in a kitchen?

Yes, if you are comfortable with etching and a lived-in look. If you want it to stay pristine, look at quartzite or a marble-look quartz or porcelain.

What is the difference between Carrara and Calacatta?

Carrara has softer grey veining on a grey-white background. Calacatta is whiter with bolder, thicker veining, and is usually rarer and more expensive.
