Onyx feature stone.

Translucent, dramatic and made to be lit from behind. Onyx is a feature stone, not a work surface.

What onyx is

Onyx is a banded, translucent stone formed from mineral deposits, a relative of limestone and travertine. Light passes through it, which is why it glows when it is backlit.

Where it works best

Feature walls, bar fronts, backlit vanities and powder rooms, fireplace surrounds and reception desks. We have built backlit onyx powder room counters with LED lighting set behind the stone.

What to know before you choose it

Onyx is soft and brittle. It scratches, etches with acids and needs careful support, so it belongs where hands and pans are not. Slabs are often reinforced with a backing for strength.

Care and sealing

A soft cloth, warm water and a pH-neutral cleaner. Keep it sealed, and keep acids and abrasive cleaners away from it.

Questions about onyx

Can onyx be used for a kitchen countertop?

We do not recommend it for a working kitchen. It suits a bar top, a feature panel or a vanity that sees light use.

How is backlit onyx lit?

LED panels or strips sit behind the stone with an even gap so the light spreads without hot spots. We plan the lighting with your electrician before the stone is cut.
