Quartz countertops.
Consistent colour, non-porous and the lowest-effort surface day to day. Quartz is the practical choice for a kitchen that gets used.
What quartz is
Engineered quartz is made from crushed natural quartz, typically around 90 percent by weight, bound with polymer resin and pigments. Because it is made rather than quarried, the pattern is consistent and the surface is non-porous.
Where it works best
Kitchen countertops and islands, bathroom vanities, laundry rooms and shower benches. Marble-look quartz, such as the Calacatta patterns, gives you veining without etching.
What to know before you choose it
The resin is its weak point. Hot pans straight from the stove can scorch or crack it, so use a trivet. Strong, direct sunlight can yellow some quartz over time, so we do not recommend it outdoors.
Care
Warm water and a mild detergent. It never needs sealing. Avoid bleach and harsh solvents.
Questions about quartz
Should I choose quartz or quartzite?
Quartz is more uniform, needs no sealing and is the easiest to live with. Quartzite is natural, takes heat better and every slab is unique.
Does quartz need sealing?
No. It is non-porous, so there is nothing to seal.
